I am intrigued and will begin the actual trilogy now. I may or may not have skimmed over the battles between the two brothers.because who's who and why are they fighting and who sided with which Lotus Guild? Maybe this was meant to be written after book one instead of as an introduction to the trilogy. "Sure, things are a bit bleak but behold.a new hope." I'm getting a Star Wars vibe with this one. If this is what the novella is like and it's better and more engaging than many full-length novels out there, I'm looking forward to the actual trilogies.Ģ) There's a beauty/lyricism to the writing cadence and I'd say it works particularly well with high fantasy stories.ģ) This did perfectly what a good prequel does: provide backstory and emotional context for what's to come. I didn't know anything about this book or even this series before beginning, so I was pleasantly surprised by the unique world building that Jay Kristoff established through the second person perspective of Koh, the cursory span of the war, the characters, and the overall tone.ġ) This didn't read like a 125-page novella to me. Well, that was a bit sad and hopeful and Star Wars-ey. 7/6/2023 0 Comments Ashes to Ashes by Tami HoagHoag (A Thin Dark Line) has a way of sneaking up on the reader in superior thriller tradition, taking her time in revealing monstrous images lurking in the dark corners. “An up-all-night read.”- The Detroit News “You’ll want to lock the doors while you’re reading.”-Minneapolis Star Tribune For she’s the only woman who has what it takes to stop the killer. For Laura Willowes, it’s her brother’s home in Father it’s – you guessed it! – the father’s. In both, an unmarried woman is desperate for her independence, and not to be subservient in her relative’s home. Rather than replicate my paper, I’ll do something more akin to my usual book reviews – though stealing some of the same research! Father is a novel that reminded me an awful lot of Lolly Willowes by Sylvia Townsend Warner. But they made me feel very welcome, and I spoke about one of her lesser-known novels, Father (1931). The panel I spoke on had three people (including the chair) who’d published books about von Arnim… and me. It was really enjoyable the people there were divided between those who knew everything about E von A and those (like me) who really like her, but haven’t read them all (I’ve only read about eight). As I mentioned recently, I spent last weekend in Cambridge at a conference about Elizabeth von Arnim. She tackles a wide range of topics, such as giving feminism a tough love talk in hopes it can become more intersectional telling society’s beauty standards to kick rocks and demanding that toxic masculinity close its mouth and legs (enough with the manspreading already!), and get out of the way so true progress can happen. Written in her trademark unfiltered and singularly witty style, Robinson’s latest essay collection is a call to arms. Page Length: 336 pages (hardcover edition) “Everything’s Trash, But It’s Okay” by Phoebe Robinson (2018) Book Review: “Everything’s Trash, But That’s Okay” by Phoebe Robinson As the place burns, the house robots go into overdrive trying to put out the fire and clean up the ash but it is of no use, and in an oddly disturbing scene the robots maniacally carry out their duties until they are completely consumed by the fire. It calls out for the family, offering assistance and requesting for their preferences on trivial everyday matters, but the only response received is silence.Īfter a time of this pointless routine, a nearby tree falls and crashes through a window in the kitchen causing an aggressive fire to spread throughout the rooms of the house. It continues to make breakfast, wash the dishes, vacuum, dust and water the lawn. The family that had occupied the home must have died a long time before in some sort of nuclear war, as is hinted at via the ruined landscape, but the house is ignorant to the fact. The story is set in the year 2026 in a sophisticated, self-sustaining house surrounded by a barren wasteland of rubble.
